सर्वोच्च न्यायालय कलम 142 अंतर्गत अधिकारांच्या वापराबाबत सर्वोच्च न्यायालय सोमवारी महत्त्वपूर्ण निर्णय देऊ शकते. सर्वोच्च न्यायालयाचे घटनापीठ ठरवेल की सर्वोच्च न्यायालयाला थेट विवाह रद्द करण्याचा अधिकार आहे की कनिष्ठ न्यायालयाच्या निर्णयानंतरच अपीलांवर सुनावणी करावी. दोन दशकांहून अधिक काळ, सुप्रीम कोर्टाने विवाह रद्द करण्यासाठी कलम 142 अंतर्गत अधिकारांचा अपवादात्मकपणे वापर केला आहे.
