भारतीय वंशाचा ऑस्ट्रेलिया मधील बायोटेक्नॉलॉजिस्ट Dr Kiran Mahale याने टाकाऊ अन्नातून इंधननिर्मितीचा प्रयोग यशस्वी केला आहे. सध्या जगभरात इंधन हे मर्यादीत स्वरूपात असल्याने त्याचे दर दिवसाला वाढत आहेत. या इंधन टंचाईवर पर्यावरण पुरक नवा पर्याय हा टाकाऊपासून टिकाऊ प्रयोग आहे. अन्नातील फर्मेंटेबल शुगर इथेनॉल मध्ये मिसळली आणि त्याचा वापर पेट्रोल मध्ये करण्यात आला आहे. दरम्यान किरण महाले ने University of Southern Queensland मधून पीएचडी केली आहे.
